After completing the Secondary School Leaving Certificate, he entered politics as a student leader of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and then commanded the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League’s Muslim Youth League (Youth League); he became one of the most famous IUML leaders in Kerala.

V. K. Ebrahim Kunju began his political career in Kerala as a member of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF), the student wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), before joining the Muslim Youth League.
Kunju became one of the most renowned Muslim League leaders in Kerala. During his twenty-year tenure as a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly between 2001 and 2021, he held ministerial positions in a variety of State government responsibilities.
V. K. Ebrahim Kunju was a candidate for the IUML in the 2001 elections for the Kerala Legislative Assembly; the United Democratic Front (UDF), which won the election and formed the government, included the Indian Union Muslim League.
He represented the Mattancherry Assembly constituency in the Ernakulam district of Kerala; in his first election, he defeated the independent candidate M. A. Thomas, who was the incumbent MLA for the district.
On 6 January 2005, he assumed ministerial duties for the Industries and Social Welfare ministries and remained in government until 2006. V. K. Ebrahim Kunju defeated M. C. Josephine of the CPI(M) in the 2006 Kerala Assembly election and maintained the Mattancherry seat.
V. K. Ebrahim Kunju defeated CPI(M) candidate K. Chandran Pillai in the 2011 election for the Kalamassery Assembly constituency. He was appointed Minister of Public Works in the second Oommen Chandy cabinet led by the UDF; V. K. Ebrahim Kunju assumed office on 23 May 2011 and resigned on 20 May 2016.
In 2019, the Kerala High Court ordered the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate V. K. Ebrahim Kunju for alleged money laundering after Girish Babu, a local of Kalammaserry, filed a public interest litigation suit against the former minister. Gireesh accused Ebrahim Kunju of depositing around 10 crores of illegal money into the bank account of IUML’s monthly newspaper, Chandrika.
It was said that the money was placed around the time that the government abolished Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes (November 2016). The money was allegedly connected to the Palarivattom flyover fraud.
The leadership of the Indian Union Muslim League supported V. K. Ebrahim Kunju, dismissed the claims as unfounded, and said that the transactions were ordinary long-term subscriber monies gathered by the newspaper’s management. In May 2020, Girish filed a plea alleging that V. K. Ebrahim Kunju promised him Rs 5 Lakhs in exchange for dropping the matter.
