Rakesh Tikait Role in Farmers protest

Rakesh Tikait

Rakesh became very popular in the country after his massive contribution in the farmer’s protest 2020-21.In November 2020, his organization BKU joined the 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protest, demanding declaration of MSP as a legal right, exclusion of farmers from the law to curb pollution to allow burning of crops and removal of the farm bills.

After two months of peaceful sit-down protests, on January 26, 2021, farmers from Singhu border, Tikri border, and Ghazipur border drove their tractors into Delhi. Rakesh Tikait was one of the people who planned the event. As soon as the gathering began, a group of protesters went off the planned route, broke through the barricades, and went into central Delhi.

The protest in the center of Delhi got violent, and 394 security officers and one protester were harmed. So, different parts of the government put pressure on the farmers to leave the protest places. Heavy security forces were sent to different protest sites, like the one at the Ghazipur border where Bhartiya Kisan Union spokesman Rakesh Tikait was leading the protest.

The farmers were given a deadline by the Ghaziabad government: they had to leave the Ghazipur protest spot and open the road blockade. Rakesh Tikait was asked to turn himself in to the police because he was named in one of the FIRs made about the violence on Republic Day. He also cried in front of cameras as he talked to reporters from the media. Rakesh Tikait refused to turn himself in and said that the protests would go on even if he was shot.

He said, “They (government) are hatching a conspiracy to kill me in the name of arrest. Unwanted elements with arms are being sent to the protest site in vehicles with stickers of Lucknow Assembly. There has been no violence on the Ghazipur border. Despite this, the government is adopting a repressive policy. We want to court arrest peacefully. But it seems there is a plan to stir violence while protesters return. If there is any such plan, I will remain here. I will face the bullet. I will take my own life, but I won’t take back out from the protest till the laws are repealed.”
